German Diplom Student Internship Program

Thank you for your interest in pursuing a Diplom Internship through the University of Utah Programs in Molecular Biology and Biological Chemistry.

The Molecular Biology (MB) and Biological Chemistry (BC) Programs normally serve as an umbrella for the admission and training of graduate students, and are hosting this Diplom Internship Program. For your convenience, we have already received positive responses from the mentors listed below for participation in the Diplom Internship. However, the MB/BC Programs include over a hundred faculty from many departments and research institutes, from which you can also choose from for your research.

The Diplom Internship offers financial assistance for both housing and travel, and a flexible schedule. Please consult the guidelines below:

1) Application and Lab Placement: Diplom students will directly contact a prospective mentor and discuss participation in the Internship Program. The Professor then applies to the MB/BC Diplom Internship Program, and the request is reviewed by the Directors of MB/BC. We request that the application includes two letters from advisors/professors and a transcript, for review by the MB/BC Directors. If you have questions please contact Jessica Askin: jessica.askin@hci.utah.edu.

2) Program Timeline: We expect that the internship will last between 6 and 8 weeks. There is no set schedule, and applications for the program will be accepted any time. However, as you must make arrangements for visa, travel, and housing, we strongly recommend that you apply six months in advance.

3) Finances: You will be paid a stipend of $300.00 per week, up to a total of $2,100.00, if your stay is 7 weeks or longer. In addition, we will cover up to $1,500.00 of your airfare costs. Please bring enough money for extra-curricula activities during your stay. If your stay is longer than seven weeks, then the extra costs must be borne by the student or host Professor.
Please note that due to US law, you must obtain a social security number before we can pay you your stipend. This takes 4-5 weeks, so you will not be paid until the 6th week. Thus, you must cover costs in advance, and then get reimbursed.

4) Travel: You must arrange your own travel, and the MB/BC Diplom Internship Program will reimburse up to $1500.

5) Visa: Your Utah host Professor needs to help you with the visa process. Please go to the following government link to inform yourself and your professor about the required documents http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1267.html#6. The Professor will need a copy of your passport picture and biographical page. Please scan and send it to him/her. He/She will begin the DS-2019 application (Certificate Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status) and DS7002 application (Training/Internship Placement plan). Both are required in order to send you the documents for the J-1 visa. It may take several weeks for us to get your documents. There is a SEVIS fee of $100.00 to process the documents, for which you will be responsible to pay.

6) Health Insurance: All international students are required to have US health insurance. Students must pay for their own insurance please see option #2 at: http://www.sa.utah.edu/inter/iss/new/health_insurance.htm. This describes the insurance requirements. If you do not arrange your own insurance, the MB/BC Programs can help you find insurance options from the University of Utah.

We look forward to your participation in the program.

Sincerely,
Brad Cairns, Director
Graduate Program in Molecular Biology

Dennis Winge, Director
Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry
